I've just been looking through old photos and found this:
I'm sure most of you have suffered problems with this... One mornig the car just won't start.. After lots of messing about you find it's the FPR, dropping a lot of voltage across the contacts. I investigated this a while ago and found that when the contacts open, a whacking big spark jumps across the gap. After a few years of turning ignition on/off the spark eventually erodes the contacts, giving a higher resistance and eventually enough voltage drop to kill your engine... Ok, so thats the reasoning, now here is the fix: ![]() Those are little Supressors (or Varistors) soldered onto the back of the PCB across the contacts... the spark energy is dissapated in the supressor, and not across the contacts, thus making them last longer! Those ones there were 60v rated, can't read the power rating but
shouldn't need to be too big!Phew.. a lot of explaining to get there! Scott  __________________ http://www.astragte.tk/ - Mk2 Astra Turbo Site. My MSN: sb_scottmonkey@yahoo.co.uk |
