Crank
Seal blown?
There
are several theories on why some cars blow their crank seals regularly,
some even running stock boost.
This
one (click on 'oiling bypass') blames the design of Toyota's oilfilter
system.
This
one blames the oil pressure in a less convincing way.
In
any case excessive blowby gases will build up pressure in the crankcase
and won't do the seals any good. Here is how to check the condition
of the one-way valve - or as Toyota calls it, PCV valve (Positive
Crankcase Ventilation)
|
Disconnect
the hose on the camcover side and hook the test hose, attatched
to an air compressor. Be very careful, you don't want to blow
it to bits, just pressurise it up to 2 bar max. If it holds the
pressure, then the valve is doing it's job and won't allow the
camcover to become pressuirsed.
You
also have to do the 'suck' test.

This
is how you do not want to test it. The air column is compressible
so this setup might show "airflow" when there is none |

Adjustable cam gears
In
one word: Junk, in the proud tradition of aftermarket parts that don't
have to pass any quality or reliability standards. Buyer beware.

Soft
as butter.
AEM
cam gears are not much better either, they are famous for losing
their settings as the friction provided by the 3 bolts is inadequate.

Boost
signal pickup
|
This
is the correct place if you need to tap into the boost signal
(installing a boost gauge, pressure switch etc...)
Do
not use the one next to it because you risk engine meltdown if
it pops off under boost - the FPR also uses that one, better leave
it alone!

High
end missing could be attributed to these corroded little fellows.
The damage can be hidden underneath the protective layers, so
do not assume that they are healthy just because they look OK.
Years
of baking heat take their toll on the insulation, and every time
the plugs are changes these are disturbed and can potentially
break apart.
If
in doubt replace them, or take the time to rewire them. Well worth
it.
